If you've always wanted to take pictures in Southern Utah's iconic red rock scenery but don't want to make the long drive to Moab or St. George, Red Ledges is the perfect alternative. Located in Diamond Fork Canyon near Springville, this hidden gem features warm sandstone cliffs, vibrant red dirt, unique rock formations, greenery, and sweeping canyon views—all within about 30 minutes of Provo.
When should I start my session at this location?
Since the rock features in this location are quite tall and the ledges are more tucked away, I suggest starting your session 1.5 to 2 hours before sunset. I have never been there at sunrise but I assume it would be best to start 30 minutes after sunset for the same reasons.
Good to Know
- No photography permit or entrance fee is typically required.
- Dogs are welcome if they are leashed and cleaned up after.
- There are picnic areas and restrooms near the parking area
- The area is popular for hikers and rock climbers, especially on weekends, so weekday evenings are a better option if you want to avoid recreationalists.
Walking & Accessibility
- Easy access from the parking area.
- Minimal walking required for most photo locations.
- Mostly flat terrain with a few uneven rocky sections.
- Optional short climbs for more dramatic overlooks.
Comfortable walking shoes that won't get sand in them are recommended, and you can always change into your photo session shoes once we reach our photo spots.

For reference: these photos below were taken at a first look session in May and we started at 6:30 pm. Sunset was at 8:30 pm.
